The first picture shows Carol with a much older Marky. Carol looks like a tomboy in the second picture with Jean. He worked her like a boy on the farm and Carol often felt that he was disappointed she was not a boy to replace his retarded (the term that was used back then) son. The picture of Carol sitting in Jean's chair was the only time she was allowed to sit in it. As you can see in 1979, Carol liked toys normally assigned to boys at the time. She hated playing with dolls, playing house or school, or other girlie activities. She loved her farm machinery, race tracks, and cars. The eighth-grade school picture shows Carol with the mask of happiness. This was at a time when she and Barbara were hiding from Jean and not living at home. High school and college graduation pictures show Carol's success in school, which would not have been possible without Barbara pushing her success despite the horrific home situation.
